Together We Give Kids a Chance

Our mission is to put education first. The International BookSmart Foundation was founded in 1988 with a simple mission: Give the children of Africa a better opportunity to improve their education. To that end, the International BookSmart Foundation collects donated books, sorts, ships and distributes those books and resources directly to the children who benefit the most. It is our belief that by improving the educational resources available to the children of Africa, a real change occurs in their lives.

The International BookSmart Foundation maintains that access to books and increased literacy are keys to a brighter future for many children in Africa. The Foundation works to improve the quality of education for disadvantaged students in Africa and other developing countries. It donates books and other education resource materials from United States public school systems, publishers, and other sources to: School Libraries, BookSmart Libraries, Resource Centers, and Academic Enrichment Programs.

Since its inception, IBSF successfully supplied more than 5 million books to disadvantaged schools in Africa, established 114 school libraries, and set-up BookSmart libraries in 20 resource centers that serve communities and clusters of schools. These accomplishments gave the children living in these rural and urban areas greater access to books.

The Foundation is dedicated to improving educational opportunities for disadvantaged students so that they may fulfill their potential as productive citizens of a democratic country. To this end, the Foundation plans to donate at least 5 million books to African institutions over the next three years. This effort exposes hundreds of thousands of urban and rural disadvantaged youth to learning resources, which were previously unavailable to them.

Our High Point, NC warehouse facility is the collection point for donated books. Here, our team sorts the books by category and repack for shipment. Once ready, we pack the books into sea containers for shipment directly to the recipient school or organization.

Donors, corporate supporters and grants cover all shipment costs. The International BookSmart Foundation is a registered non-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization. Additionally, the International BookSmart Foundation is a registered not-for-gain Section 21 company in South Africa.

All that we do, is done for the children.
